Network Technician I
This is a hybrid entry-level position responsible for performing technical functions in support of network maintenance and installation activities. The work involves basic assembly, cabling, testing, and maintenance of network systems and components under direct supervision. Work is well-defined, and tasks often involve following established procedures and documentation. This position primarily requires on-site work due to the need for direct supervision and hands-on tasks. The expectation is that this position will require on-site work 4-5 days a week under normal circumstances.
What You Will Do
Here is a brief summary of what one would expect to be generally responsible for in this role.
- Participates as part of a team in installation, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, and documentation of network service systems.
- Contributes to the maintenance operations of network infrastructure following established NETS and industry procedures and guidelines.
- Assists in addressing UCAR IT and computing support requirements as assigned through a work request system.
- Assists with equipment assembly, disassembly, and component replacement
- Performs network testing and certification with supervision
- Receives incoming shipments, verifies, and inventories as necessary.
- Participate in team meetings.
- May occasionally be called upon to render service before or after their scheduled hours
- Participate as part of a team in support of network equipment and infrastructure installation projects as directed by NETS Technicians, Engineers, and Management.
- May assist in installing, relocating, and/or removing IT infrastructure and equipment, including network cabling, cabling pathways, and related equipment at all UCAR sites.
- May participate as part of a team in the installation of IT infrastructure systems, racks, cabinets, communications tray, etc., including network conduit systems and pathways.
- Contributes to maintaining and updating the asset management system and network infrastructure inventory.
- Contributes to the reading, interpretation, and utilization of information depicted in schematic diagrams
- Uses wiring diagrams for interconnections between equipment to identify and isolate basic problems.
- Reports variances or identified problems.
- Label equipment and infrastructure per NETS standards.

Education and Experience (Required):
- High school diploma or equivalent and 3 months of relevant experience, training, or education.
- Please note that this position requires (1) the possession of a valid CO Drivers license and a driving record compliant w/ UCAR's liability insurance requirements, (2) physical tasks in a technically complex environment (ability to lift up to 50 lbs, dexterity related to cabling, navigating tight spaces, and other similar tasks).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Required)
- Familiarity with basic diagnostic equipment for routine testing, such as multimeters.
- Familiarity with basic tools such as soldering tools, wiring tools, small electric tools, and hand tools.
- Familiar with the use of computers and the Internet.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Ability to understand and act on verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to analyze and solve basic problems logically.
- Ability to install, set up, maintain, and/or move equipment either individually or with a partner.
- Working ability with construction tools, building techniques, and fabrication techniques as they apply to networking environments.
- Able to operate material handling equipment - pallet jacks.
- Skilled in written and oral communication skills, including using electronic mail and other electronic communication tools.
- Ability to understand and adhere to UCAR safety policies, procedures, and training content to maintain a safe working environment.
- Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with colleagues and supervisors.
- Demonstrated skill utilizing Google and Microsoft business applications.
- Values continuous learning and self-improvement.
- Ability to occasionally work evenings and weekends
