Site Description
New Beginnings Youth Development Center (NB) is the District of Columbia’s long-term detention center for male and female youth located in Laurel, MD. It is responsible for the care and custody of youth placed in secure detention by court order.
Position Overview
All teachers will be expected to support the school-wide goals of emphasizing literacy, helping students develop their critical thinking abilities, driving all students toward mastery and understanding, and helping students find their strengths and talents and use them to address weaknesses and overcome fears. This position will be responsible for the NCCER Core Curriculum. The instructor will be required to prepare students for certification exams. This position is located inside a juvenile detention center.
Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
- Provide on-site construction skills instruction and assessment aligned with NCCER standards, including proper use and handling of tools and equipment, demolition, rough framing, drywall, carpentry, green building, electrical, plumbing, painting, and masonry.
- Teach the proper use and handling of all hand tools, power tools, and equipment.
- Design engaging and rigorous learning activities that will keep students engaged. Work with Construction and Academic Teams to cover required HBI-PACT and NCCER certification curricula and align to the broader construction and GED preparatory curricula.
- Assess and facilitate students’ academic and vocational growth through observation and Skills Achievement Reviews. Track and monitor assessment results to ensure student learning, progress, and achievement. Meet student mastery targets.
- Support all school staff in implementing effective and consistent school-wide restorative practices, such as de-escalation strategies and restorative circles.
- Collaborate with the Transitions Department to develop plans for students aging out of the program and those pursuing careers in the construction industry.
- Maintain hard copy and electronic records of student achievement towards attaining HBI, NCCER and other certifications.
- Inventory and maintain all tools, equipment and supplies and inform supervisor about material needs for instruction and/or construction site.
- Ensure the construction lab and/or construction site are well organized for student learning and fully compliant with health and safety regulations.
- Manages classroom activities to include daily attendance, creation of lesson plans, integration of differentiated instruction techniques, presentation and proctoring of assessments, and other typical classroom activities as required.
- Plans and administers written and/or online tests and hands-on lab activities/performance tests according to NCCER standards.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
- Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
- Performs any other duties as assigned by Principal or other appropriate administrator.
Qualifications
- Associates degree, journey worker license, and/or certification in trade area/s of Carpentry or other high-demand occupation in the Architecture and Construction cluster (required).
- 5 or more years documented experience in the trade, with 4000 hours in the desired field in the last 5 years.
- Must have or be eligible for certification by OSSE in the appropriate content area (Within 1-year of employment-required)
- NCCER Craft Instructor certification, or ability to earn same.
- Ability to leverage and apply available technologies, including computers and hands-on learning equipment.
- Ability to assist students with hands-on learning activities, using tools and handling construction materials.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; computer literacy including MS Office (Word, Excel, and web based applications), and data management systems.
- Experience working with incarcerated or opportunity youth (preferred).
- An unyielding belief that with the appropriate supports, coupled with high expectations, all students can significantly improve their academic skills, and can develop pro-social and culturally normative behaviors that will enable them to succeed at school and beyond.
