Structured Literacy Tutor (Dyslexia | Slingerland-trained | San Francisco)

San Francisco – Part-Time / Full-Time – $20-$30/hr, based on experience

Stillman Academy is hiring compassionate, curious educators who want to change the lives of students who struggle with reading and writing.

We specialize in structured literacy instruction for students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD, and other language-based learning differences. Our approach blends direct, systematic instruction with hands-on learning, field trips, and community-based exploration.

Position: Structured Literacy Tutor

Type: Part-Time or Full-Time

Grade Levels: K–9

Start Date: Immediately

Location: Primarily in students’ homes in San Francisco (personal transportation required)

What You’ll Do

  • Provide 1:1 tutoring in reading, writing, and spelling
  • Design personalized lessons tailored to each student’s needs and interests
  • Communicate regularly with families and school staff
  • Participate in Saturday field trips (biweekly) and summer camp programs 
  • Track student progress and conduct assessments
  • Attend ongoing training sessions and certification courses
  • Be mentored in the Slingerland Approach, with the opportunity to earn Teacher or Instructor Certification

Training & Professional Development

  • Slingerland Certification: We will pay the full cost of tuition, materials, and required practicum.
  • SRSD Online Writing Program: Tuition paid in full by the company. This is an elective training and hours are not paid.  Only the tuition is covered. If elected, completion is required within 6 months of start date.
  • Earn up to 24 Graduate Level credits through University of San Diego.

Benefits

  • Medical & Dental: Benefits eligibility begins 6 months after your start date, even for part-time status.
  • Paid Time Off (Sick Leave): Accrued at 1 hour per 30 hours worked, in compliance with San Francisco and California law. Accrual cap: 40 hours. Unused hours carry over annually.
  • Other Leave / PTO: Sick leave accrual is provided in lieu of separate paid sick policies per local law.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in college or hold a college degree
  • Passionate about helping children learn to read and write
  • Reliable, organized, and eager to learn
  • Willing to earn Slingerland, SRSD, and LIPS training certifications
  • Enjoy working 1:1 and adjusting lessons to student interests
  • Personal transportation required (field trips may include hikes up to 8 miles)

Schedule & Hours

  • Student sessions take place 2–5 mornings per week
  • Tutoring also occurs in afternoons and evenings
  • Planning and training during midday hours
  • Field trips: Every other Saturday
  • Hourly pay: $20–$30 (based on experience)
  • We observe all school holidays
