2026 Mechanical Design Summer Intern

We are hiring a 2026 Mechanical Design Sumner Intern – Grand Rapids, MI that will own valuable mechanical design projects that provide new value to the company. You will be provided with mentorship through the development and design lifecycle with a keen focus on sustainability. We have a major focus on learning by doing. CAD will be a primary focus of the role, but you will also be exposed to brainstorming, cost analysis, the product development process, prototyping, and document control processes. 

 

Curious about the difference between a Mechanical Designer and a Product Design Engineer? 
A Mechanical Designer works closely with engineers to bring product concepts to life. Their main responsibilities include: 

  • Translating ideas into 3D models, bridging the gap between industrial design and engineering. 
  • Evaluating how components fit and interact with each other. 
  • Releasing designs into the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system. 
  • Creating and maintaining technical drawings throughout the product’s lifecycle. 

 

You’ll learn quickly this company offers a diversity of products and materiality. While you design the product, you will learn and apply the design thinking process. 

 

You will experience Steelcase’s mechanical design process, including: 

  • Ideation 
  • Bill-of-Material Structuring 
  • Designing Concepts and Ideas: Surfacing, Sheet Metal, Solid Modeling, Drafting, 
  • Document control 
  • Prototyping

Your Future Team:   

You will join one of the many Steelcase development teams relating to furniture, seating, health care, education, etc. Additionally, we believe our mechanical designing atmosphere mirrors the culture of Steelcase with people who are inclusive, open to questions, hungry for new insights, respectful, experts in their fields, and kind. 

 

Who You Are: 

  • Are you eager to learn our product development and design process? 
  • Are you curious? 
  • Are you mechanically inclined? 
  • Are you a self-starter? 
  • Is your mechanical proficiency strong (creative, can think critically and apply it to design)? 
  • Do you have desire to apply your 3D modeling/CAD experience? 

 

Required Skills and Competencies: 

  • Current or recent high school graduate with emphasis in Computer Aided Design (CAD) or student pursuing an associate’s or bachelor’s degree with an emphasis in mechanical design 
  • Course completion: Two courses focused on CAD software at the high school or college level, preferably one with SolidWorks or Creo 
  • Preferred: experience in rapid prototyping methods (3D Printing, Lathe, CNC, etc.) 
  • Preferred: experience helping teach CAD software 
  • Nice to have: certified in a 3D modeling software
