Utilities Engineer (JC-492389)

Under supervision of the Senior Utilities Engineer (Supervisor), Utilities Engineers in the Rail Crossings and Engineering Branch (RCEB) help ensure that all rail crossings in California are safely designed, constructed, and maintained. RCEB oversees approximately 12,000 rail crossings, divided into territories and assigned to Utilities Engineers. Each Utilities Engineer is expected to be the main point of contact for all matters within their territory, such as projects to build new crossings or modify existing crossings, incident reviews, and investigating complaints.

Utilities Engineers are expected to spend half of their time in the field inspecting and evaluating highway-rail crossings for compliance with Commission General Orders, Public Utilities Code, Federal regulations and industry standards. RCEB engineers lead internal and external meetings that require the ability to clearly articulate complicated issues when recommending solutions based on engineering judgment and/or specific regulations.

Possession of a valid California Driver's License, Class C is required.

Working Conditions

This position requires an ability to travel to assigned territory, including overnight stays within the State of California. RCEB engineers may also attend week-long conferences or training; both within and outside of the State of California.

This position is home-based that has been identified as field based. Field-based workers spend 50% or more time in the field, requiring onsite attendance to perform their duties. Their assigned headquarter office will be based on the selected candidate's primary residence location.
