Position Overview
The Director of Facilities is a cabinet-level administrator responsible for the comprehensive leadership, management, and strategic direction of all facilities operations within the school district. This position reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer and ensures all district buildings, grounds, and related infrastructure are maintained in a safe, efficient, and cost-effective manner, supporting student learning, extra-curricular and community events, and staff productivity. The Director collaborates closely with other cabinet members and district leadership. The Director of Facilities will also be responsible for working with architects and general contractors on planning and overseeing construction, upgrades, and long-range maintenance projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership and Oversight: Supervise and evaluate custodial and maintenance staff, including managers, frontline employees, and contracted service providers. Foster a positive work environment and promote professional development.
- Facilities Management: Direct daily operations and maintenance of all school district buildings, grounds, and equipment.
- Preventive Maintenance Program: Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive preventive maintenance schedule for all district facilities. This includes routine health and safety testing, inspections, and documentation to ensure compliance and optimal facility conditions. Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations related to facility safety and accessibility.
- Special Projects: Plan, coordinate, and oversee special initiatives such as renovations, upgrades, and capital improvement projects. Serve as district liaison for contractors, architects, and external partners.
- Energy Conservation: Develop and implement strategies for energy efficiency and sustainability, including monitoring utility usage, identifying cost-saving opportunities, and promoting environmentally responsible practices throughout the district.
- Construction Oversight: Manage all aspects of construction projects, from initial planning to completion. Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and meet all specifications and standards.
- Future Planning: Collaborate with district leadership to assess long-term facility needs, develop master plans, and prioritize capital investments. Prepare reports and recommendations for the Board of Education.
- Budget and Resource Management: Develop and administer the facilities department budget, including forecasting, purchasing, and inventory control. Seek opportunities for cost savings and grant funding.
- Emergency Preparedness: Lead the development and implementation of emergency response plans related to facilities, including fire safety, weather emergencies, and security threats.
- Security and Safety Infrastructure: Oversee facility-related safety and security systems, including access control, surveillance, alarms, and communication with the District Safety and Security Coordinator. Support districtwide crisis management planning and school safety drills.
- Stakeholder Communication: Serve as the primary point of contact for facility-related concerns from staff, students, families, and community partners. Communicate effectively with all stakeholders regarding projects, policies, and issues, including the facilitation of the Buildings and Ground Committee of the Board of Directors.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in facilities management, engineering, construction management, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
- Progressive experience in facilities administration, maintenance, and construction within a K-12 educational setting.
- Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills, with experience managing large teams and complex projects.
- Knowledge of Pennsylvania school district operations, regulatory requirements, and best practices in facility management.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
- Proficiency in budgeting, project management, and energy conservation strategies.
- Valid Pennsylvania driver’s license
- Relevant certifications preferred
Compensation and Terms
This is a full-time, cabinet-level position with a competitive salary starting at $150,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications, and extensive benefits package. The Director of Facilities is expected to maintain a flexible schedule to oversee after-hours emergencies and attend evening meetings as needed.
