Sheriff's IT Specialist
Provide technical support, advice, and assistance to internal users with technical, hardware, and software system problems. Specialists generally deal directly with end users and vendors and must effectively communicate answers in a way they can understand.
- Sets up and installs new computers and peripheral equipment when needed
- Maintains physical inventories and proper labeling of internal county computers and related equipment and software
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by establishing personal networks and working relationships with Central IT and other County departments
- Diagnoses and researches systems hardware, software, and operator problems. Recommend or perform actions to correct/troubleshoot problems including equipment repairs
- Provides technical assistance by responding to inquiries regarding errors, problems, or questions with computer programs
- Coordinates and reviews completed projects or computer programs to ensure that the goals are met and that programs are compatible with other programs already in use
- Provides technical assistance by responding to inquiries regarding errors, problems, or questions with computer programs
- Establish and prioritize importance of using secure backup equipment and devices, including cloud storage
- Replaces defective or inadequate hardware and software packages and makes recommendations for improvements in computer system based on the needs of the Sheriff’s Office
- Evaluates vendor-supplied software by studying user objectives; testing software compatibility with existing hardware and programs
- Places software into production by loading software into computer and establishes connections with coordination of Central IT
- Maximizes use of hardware and software by coordinating, preparing and conducting training sessions for training users; interpreting instructions; answering questions, supports end users and staff on computer program use
- Trains and supports end users and staff on computer program use; coordinate, prepare and conduct training sessions
- Attends training technical training conferences, and seminars and reviews publications to keep research current regarding new networks, software, hardware and security products and procedures
- Assists with quality assurance/quality control of Spillman data and records
- Other duties as assigned
- Organizes software and, licensing information, and maintenance of contracts, etc.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Associates degree in Information Systems, Computer Science or related field; Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
- Two (2) years’ experience relating to Information Systems, technology, or computer technical assistance
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM JOB
- Knowledge of Sheriff’s Office internal software programs; such as: Spillman; NextGen911; radio communication software/hardware; external interface technology
- Ability to work well with staff and the general public
- Ability to be a self-starter including being able to work independently in government office settings
- Ability to read and interpret documents, and laws in the English language
- Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas in spoken and written format so individuals may effectively understand and convey communications
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
- Inductive and deductive reasoning – ability to combine separate pieces of information, or specific answers to problems, to form general rules or conclusions; includes coming up with a logical explanation for why a series of seemingly unrelated events occur together and deciding if an answer makes sense
- Knowledge of database management
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- Possess and maintain valid Wisconsin Driver’s license and have access to transportation suitable to complete necessary work out of the office
- Must be able to obtain federal clearance and a clear criminal background check
