Secondary Science Teacher (grades 6-8)

Arts Academy in the Woods is seeking a full-time Secondary Science Teacher.

The Arts Academy is a fine and performing arts public, charter high school serving students from Macomb, Wayne and Oakland counties. Our students complete the Michigan Merit Curriculum while majoring in one or more art areas: dance, vocal music, acting, instrumental music, digital art, creative writing, 2D art or 3D art. We are a small, close-knit community, and we serve a diverse group of approximately 350 students and 25. Our community prides itself on its eclectic population; 52% of our students are white, 31% are African American, 54% are economically disadvantaged, 41% of our students are male. Our staff is dedicated to supporting each student as an individual, with respect for their identity, background, and individual needs.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Current Michigan Certification in Secondary Science or Integrated Science (DX, DI preferred will consider DP, DC, DA) or 90-day letter confirming appropriate certification.
• Bachelor's Degree.
• Experience working with high school students and families.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience teaching Middle and/or High School Science
• Familiarity with best practice formative assessment strategies, arts integrated education, and with the Common Core State Standards
• Ability to work with multiple ages

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Teach AAW's rigorous Science curriculum to middle school students at a variety of experience and ability levels.
• Complete faculty responsibilities per the AAW Master Teacher Contract
• Manage the classroom with compassion and consistency.
• Collaborate with AAW teachers to advance the School’s mission, curriculum, and cross-curricular goals.
• Communicate regularly with families.
• Contribute to the AAW community through grade level and subject area teams.

COMPENSATION:

• Salary: Commensurate with education and experience, per the Arts Academy in the Woods Master Agreement Certified Teacher Salary Scale
• BA Step1 - $43,000 – MA+30 Step 15 - $80,396
• Benefit package available, including premium free medical and dental; MPSERS retirement; and low premium family vision per the Arts Academy in the Woods Teacher Master Contract
• Position would be within the American Federation of Teachers, Michigan Alliance of Charter Teachers and Staff, Arts Academy in the Woods Federation of Teachers, AFT Michigan, AFL-CIO.
