BTS Afterschool Student Leader/Tutor
Organization: Better Than Schools – Newton’s Thinkers Afterschool Program
Location: Multiple elementary school sites across Prince George’s County, MD
Schedule: Monday–Thursday, 2:00 PM–5:30 PM
Pay: 15 - 18 per hour (based on experience and education level)
About Better Than Schools
Better Than Schools (BTS) operates the Newton’s Thinkers Afterschool Program, a 21st Century Community Learning Center that provides high-quality enrichment and academic support for students in grades K–6. Our mission is to create engaging, hands-on learning experiences that help students strengthen academic skills, build confidence, and develop a lifelong love of learning.
Through activities like homework support, project-based learning, STREAM challenges, reading enrichment, and social-emotional development, we empower young scholars to think critically, collaborate, and grow as learners.
Position Overview
We are seeking motivated, dependable, and enthusiastic Student Leaders to join our afterschool team. Student Leaders (called “Champions”) assist in classrooms, support homework and reading groups, lead activities, and serve as positive role models for elementary students.
Ideal candidates are creative, patient, and passionate about helping children learn in a fun, supportive environment.
Responsibilities
- Assist with homework help, reading activities, and academic games
- Lead or support small-group project-based learning activities
- Model positive behavior and reinforce program expectations
- Build supportive relationships with students and staff
- Help set up, clean up, and organize materials daily
- Travel to and support multiple program sites as needed
Requirements
- Must be a high school junior or senior (GPA 3.0+) or a college student (college students preferred)
- Must have reliable transportation to and from sites
- Must be willing to work at multiple school locations across Prince George’s County
- Available Monday–Thursday, 2:00 PM–5:30 PM
- Energetic, responsible, and able to work independently and as part of a team
- Enjoys working with children and has strong communication skills
Interviews
Applicants who meet the eligibility requirements will be contacted for an interview if selected after submitting their application.
Training
All selected candidates must attend mandatory training sessions prior to the start of programming. Training dates are TBD, but will likely be held on select Saturdays in late October and early November.
