POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for planning and supervising the student’s clinical and laboratory experiences and evaluating their performance in the practical nursing education program and providing quality services that are supportive of the department’s mission to serve its customers. 

 

Responsibilities include establishing and communicating clinical objectives or outcomes within the framework of the course in which the student is enrolled, providing an orientation to the clinical site, and evaluating student experience, achievement and progress.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Abide by the policies and procedures of the Department of Adult and Community Education, the Practical Nursing Program and respective clinical institutions;
  • Design students’ clinical experiences and assignments to achieve stated clinical course objectives at the direction of and in cooperation with the course teacher;
  • Communicate and collaborate with nursing management and staff at the clinical facility to assure that facility policies and procedures are followed and that student needs and assignments are clear in order to assure both patient care and education;
  • Provide for student orientation to the assigned clinical facility, including orientation to physical environment, staff, and facility policies/procedures;
  • Supervise students in the clinical area to maintain safe practice and achieve clinical objectives and remain available to students at all times during their clinical experience and may delegate to a RN staff nurse the responsibility to supervise the performance of a nursing task by a nursing student, limited to one time performance of the specified nursing task only on the individual identified by the faculty;
  • Provide for conferences in the clinical area concurrent with unit experience, clinical learning objectives, and individual student needs; 
  • Maintain attendance and tardy records of assigned students;
  • Assist the course instructor in the laboratory setting and/or classroom setting as needed;
  • Contribute to the evaluation of student progress toward meeting clinical objectives using the established clinical evaluation tool and communicate student progress verbally and in writing to the course teacher as well as to the student at least at midterm and at end of term as needed;
  • Complete written clinical probation notices for clinical attendance or performance issues and provide copies to course instructor, program administrator and student;
  • Work cooperatively with the course teacher(s) to counsel students regarding attendance, classroom, or clinical issues and assist students to develop an appropriate plan for improvement and refer the student to other resources or program administrator;
  • Report problems, issues, deviations from expected outcomes to the course teacher(s) and/or program administrator;
  • Participate in faculty meetings, in-service programs, and projects/committees as needed or assigned;
  • Participate in graduation and other school activities as assigned;
  • Be familiar with and apply as appropriate the philosophy, objectives, and conceptual framework of the Practical Nursing Program;
  • Assume responsibility for ongoing continuing education related to current nursing practice and trends;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:        

  • Completion of an approved registered nursing education program in a jurisdiction as defined in paragraph (R) of rule 4723-5-01 of the Ohio Administrative Code.
  • Experience for at least two years in the practice of nursing as a registered nurse.
  • Current, valid licensure as a registered nurse in Ohio.
  • Ohio Department of Education – Adult Education Permit (Health Occupations).

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Evidence of competent clinical skills in the area being taught.
  • Available to work during times when customers need services including evenings.
  • Previous teaching assistant experience.
  • Expert communication/writing skills.
  • Ability to work with a variety of programs and staff.
