Job Summary:
The Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) - Competency-Based Instructor will help students learn subject matter and develop the academic, personal, and career-connected competencies that contribute to their growth as mature, capable, and responsible adults. Provide a positive, healthy, and safe learning environment in which students can achieve their maximum potential. Meet and instruct assigned students in the locations and at the times designated. Plan and facilitate a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of each student within a competency-based system. Utilize grade-level standards, district curriculum maps, competency frameworks, and district resources to provide purposeful and engaging instruction that leads to student mastery of content and demonstration of transferable skills. Establish effective rapport with students and build positive relationships with parents, community partners, and staff members. Create a learning environment that is conducive to success for students from diverse backgrounds and varying ability levels. Encourage students to maintain high standards of behavior, ownership of learning, and progress toward graduation through demonstrated competency, portfolio evidence, and college- and career-readiness experiences.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Create an engaging learning environment favorable to student learning, personal growth, and competency development.
- Motivate students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed for college, career and community readiness.
- Communicate clearly in verbal and written formats with students, parents, and teammates.
- Utilize standards, curriculum maps, and competency-aligned learning targets to develop lesson plans and learning experiences that maximize instructional time.
- Supervise students in school-based and out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day and participate in family nights, student conferences, portfolio presentations, and other school events as assigned.
- Collaborate with teammates to plan instruction, calibrate scoring, review student evidence of learning, and analyze student data in Professional Learning Communities, while continuing to learn and apply research-based practices through professional development.
- Administer and/or facilitate a variety of formative and performance-based assessments to monitor student understanding, provide feedback, and collect evidence to inform instruction, along with summative assessments to measure student learning and support transcript reporting.
- Engage in ongoing professional development tied to best practices, competency-based education, and holistic child development.
- Create, maintain, and utilize data and evidence-tracking systems that inform instructional planning, competency progress monitoring, and delivery of supports.
- Support students in developing and curating portfolio evidence, reflecting on learning, and preparing for capstone-related demonstrations of competency.
- Support students in setting goals and making progress toward postsecondary readiness through collaboration around Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP) development and career-connected learning experiences.
- Coordinate, monitor, and communicate with appropriate staff and/or community partners regarding work-based learning, internships, service learning, or other authentic learning experiences, as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education, Training and Experience:
- Possess or be eligible to receive Colorado Teaching License with appropriate endorsement covering secondary education (Grades 7-12 or K-12).
- Candidate must be endorsed in the secondary content area, passed the Praxis test in the secondary content area, and/or have 24 semester credits in the secondary content area to meet ESSA in-field status.
- Bachelor's Degree or higher.
- Completion or in-process of completing a teacher preparation program.
- Previous experience working with children preferred.
- Knowledge of content standards and various types of assessments with an emphasis in the applicable content area.
- Awareness of current research/best practices (with an emphasis in the applicable content area) and ability to translate these into classroom practice.
- Demonstrate competence with a wide range of instructional strategies.
- Demonstrate successful use of specific intervention strategies with small groups of students.
- Demonstrate flexibility with the integration of content in a standards-based system.
- Develop and maintain positive, productive and collaborative relationships with colleagues and parents.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, including ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders within the school environment.
- Knowledge of classroom management, conflict resolution, restorative practices and trauma informed care.
- Knowledge of and experience in Professional Learning Communities.
- Ability to promote and follow Board of Education Coherent Governance Policies and District policies and procedures.
- Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and education backgrounds.
- Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.
