GEAR UP - Part-Time Tutors (50 Positions) Vanguard Academy
Primary Purpose:
Provide tutoring in Math and English Language Arts as needed for GEAR UP students before, during and/or after school.
GEAR UP Program Description GEAR UP is a national initiative designed to create partnerships between targeted schools in low income communities and colleges/universities in order to work with students beginning in the elementary and middle school grades and increase college-going rates among low-income youth. Partnerships provide comprehensive college awareness activities such as mentoring, tutoring, college visits, academic course counseling, financial aid/scholarship counseling, and parental involvement activities. Partnerships also promote rigorous academic coursework and strengthen instruction/course offerings in targeted schools.
Purpose:
To provide tutoring in at least one the following content areas:
- Math: 3rd - 8th Grade, Algebra I, and/or Algebra II
- ELAR: 3rd - 8th Grade, English I, and/or English II
- Science: 5th - 8th, Biology
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- High School Diploma
- Associate Degree, Bachelor’s Degree, or Teaching Certificate (preferred)
Experience:
- Experience in providing tutoring services (preferred)
Requirements:
- Strong knowledge in content area
- Ability to work flexible hours and attend tutoring training sessions
- Excellent communication skills
- Patience and the ability to work well with children
- Passion for content, teaching, and children is necessary for success
- Must be available to work between 20 and 30 hours a week between the hours of 7:30 AM – 5:30 PM (Monday – Friday) and 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM Saturday.

Essential Duties:
The essential duties of the Content Tutor include but are not limited to:
- Provide individual and small group (3-5 students) tutoring to students in Math, ELAR, or Science as needed.
- Assist students in mastering the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in the core academic area.
- Help students with subject content.
- Assist students in improving study skills necessary for improving academic performance.
- Maintain student confidentiality.
- Prepare tutoring sessions to ensure students’ academic development.
- Follow instructional objectives and standards the teacher, campus principal, and math content coaches provide.
- Interact and communicate in a supportive, courteous, and respectful manner with students, parents, community members, and other staff members.
- Supervise and implement safe practices as it relates to participants, programs, and facilities.
- Maintain program areas by cleaning up after activities.
- Positively and successfully perform within work team dynamics.
- Maintain attendance and activity records and make required reports, including sign-in sheets.
- Attend skill development training.
- Adhere to district rules, policies and regulations.
- Enhance the program or activities via participant solicitation or feedback.
- Make recommendations to the campus principal and math content coaches regarding program enhancement and any concerns regarding operations.
- Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
