Staff Accountant

Summary of Responsibilities:

Staff accountants: report to the audit manager, senior accountant, or other more experienced, staff accountants. Initially, the staff accountants will perform any given routine audit, accounting, and tax assignments as directed by the firm. As experience is gained, staff accountants are given more difficult assignments and greater responsibilities.

Essential Functions:

1.      Become familiar with the firm’s policies and procedures.
2.      Understand the rules, regulations, and code of conduct of the AICPA.
3.      Become familiar with pertinent IRC sections and regulations
4.      Obtain a working knowledge of tax and accounting research techniques and the various research sources in the firm library.
5.      Become proficient in the preparation of corporate, individual, partnership, fiduciary and other tax returns prepared by the firm.
6.      Assume responsibility for the completion of tax returns under the supervision of more experienced staff.
7.      Perform the following audit procedures under the supervision of more experienced staff:
a.      Reconcile subsidiary ledgers to control accounts.
b.      Analyze various accounting records and general ledger accounts.
c.      Prepare, process, and summarize confirmations.
d.      Prepare a variety of workpapers and schedules.
e.      Foot and crossfoot workpapers.
f.       Audit a variety of general ledger accounts.
g.      Vouch journal entries to supporting documents.
h.      Post adjustments to the working trial balance.
i.       Observe inventories.
j.       Assist in the preparation and issuance of financial statements and related disclosures.
k.      Assist in the preparation and issuance of a variety of accountants’ and auditors’ reports.
8.      Perform other duties as assigned from time to time by the senior accountants, audit manager, or principals.



Working Conditions


This involves work in the firm’s office or on the client’s premises. Work on the client’s premises may require the use of the staff member’s personal car. Overtime will be moderate to low throughout the year. However, a high level of overtime may be required to complete audit and tax engagements.

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed. Must possess the ability to deal well with people. Must be flexible and willing to work hard and have a desire to learn.  

Required Education and Experience:

Master’s degree in accounting or be CPA eligible, and zero to three years experience in public accounting. In addition, computer, word processing, and spreadsheet expertise is essential.
