Staff Tax Accountant

SUMMARY
Examines and analyzes accounting records to determine financial status of client organization and prepares income tax return forms for individuals and businesses by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Conducts all tax work in accordance with the standards of the firm and the profession. Further is expected to exercise alertness and diligence in carrying out and completing the allotted tasks; working closely with the in-charge accountant or partner including to inform the in-charge accountant or partner promptly of problems encountered; provide explanations and on-the-job training to coworkers with less experience; and maintain a good working relationship with and clients.

Exercises due care in the performance of the responsibilities, as based on legal consideration and firm standers and procedures.

Prepares for and gains understanding of responsibilities and objectives of procedures to be performed on behalf of client including by studying prior year’s workpapers, tax returns and discussion with partner, manager and/or others on team.

Further exercises due care by being acquainted with clients, its methods of operation, and significant practices peculiar to it or the industries of which it is a part; understanding the internal control structure of the client; obtaining any knowledge readily available which is pertinent to the accounting and financial issues facing the client.

Reviews financial records such as prior tax returns, income statements, and documentation of expenditures to determine forms needed to prepare return.


Examines accounts and records and computes taxes owed according to prescribed rates, law, and regulations.

Confers with partners, manager, and/or, with approval, clients regarding effects of business of business activities on taxes, and on strategies for minimizing tax liability.

Works with partner, manager and/or, with approval, client to ensure that client complies with periodic tax payment, information reporting, and other taxing authority requirements.

Confers with partner, manager and/or with approval, client to obtain additional information on taxable income and deductive expenses and allowances.

Computes taxes owned and completes entries on tax forms utilizing firms’ systems, software and technology while following all firm procedures.

Consults tax law services, handbooks, bulletins or other reference materials provide by the firm to determine procedures or suggestions for preparation of atypical returns.

Occasionally verifies totals on forms prepared by others to detect errors of arithmetic or procedure.

Inspects item in books of original entry to determine if accepted accounting procedure was followed in recording transactions.

Complies and analyzes financial information to prepare entities to accounts, such as general ledger accounts, documenting business transactions.

Analyzes financial information detailing assets, liabilities, and capital, and prepares balance sheets, profit and loss statement, and other reports to summarize current and projected company financial position.

Travels to clients’ offices and locations to meet with clients and/or to secure and deliver data and otherwise assist clients with on-site tax issues, including dealing with computer entries. Travels to various venues for Continuing Professional Education and for meetings. May be assigned duties with other firm departments requiring travel to clients’ facilities and other locations.

Adheres to all applicable continuing professional education requirements of professional, State and regulatory agencies as well as those established by the firm. Responsible for personal compliance with applicable continuing education requirements. Reports all CPE credits to firm for in-house records of CPE course attended by all professional staff.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in accounting from four-year college or university; preferably one to two years related experience and/or training. Should you meet educational requirements to qualify for licensure as a Certified Public Accountant as established by the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy and/or any local, state and federal regulations.
 
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from individuals and group managers, clients, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
 
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
 
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Should be eligible for licensure as a Certified Public Accountant and should be in the process of obtaining such license. Must have valid, current Texas driver’s license.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Must regularly dive to off-site locations.
