Tax Controversary Accountant

Responsibilities
  • Assist in all aspects of IRS and SALT tax exams, including data collection, responding to information requests, tracking statute of limitations, providing technical advice on practice and procedure matters, and communicating with exam team, auditor, and clients
  • Assist in all aspects of IRS projects including audits, appeals, collection and penalty abatement projects, and tax resolution projects including review and analysis of client data, and preparation of required supporting documents and IRS filings
  • Draft responses to notices by federal, state, and local taxing authorities
  • Regular communication with both the IRS and States, to accurately assess client's individual and business tax issues
  • Monitor and update the Tax Controversy Department tracker to manage deadlines and ensure timely responses
  • Manage case files in a productive, efficient, and organized manner
  • Ability to investigate and diagnose client’s individual and/or business tax problems
  • Draft regular articles and posts for the ADKF website and technical updates related to tax controversy topics
  • Mentor and train less experienced staff
  • Other duties as needed and assigned

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or related field 
  • Enrolled Agent (EA) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) 
  • Fraud experience, CFE preferred
  • 2+ years of experience in public accounting 
  • Experience with IRS audits, IRS notices, and/or Sales Tax audit and research experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of federal and state tax issues, preparation of US federal and state tax returns 
  • Demonstrated understanding of GAAP
  • Technical skills - strong analytical skills to conduct tax related research, as well as draft solution-oriented recommendations, addressing specific clients' tax issues on a consistent basis
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Thorough understanding of basic financial statements
  • Professional communication
  • Knowledge of computer systems, programs, and data retrieval
