We are currently looking for a Research Associate to join the Templeton Global Macro group of Franklin Templeton Investments in San Mateo, CA.

Templeton Global Macro has been a pioneer in unconstrained global fixed income investing for almost three decades, beginning with the launch of its flagship Templeton Global Bond Fund in 1986. The team conducts in-depth global macroeconomic analysis regionally and at the individual country level, evaluating interest rates, currencies, and credit conditions. Team members meet daily to discuss ongoing market activity and macroeconomic indicators, as well as political events. The team applies a fundamental, research-driven investment approach that focuses on identifying sources of high current income worldwide that has the potential to provide compelling risk-adjusted returns. Research into specific Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) factors, combined with the fundamental macroeconomic analysis, is integral to the decision-making process. 
 
As of September 30th, 2021, the Global Macro team managed more than $38 billion in assets and the total assets under management for the company were around $1.6 trillion. Under management of Dr. Michael Hasenstab since 2001, the funds have made investments in more than 50 countries and currencies. The department’s research team continuously scans the globe in search of government bonds, currencies and credit securities with attractive valuations. The Global Macro team includes 32 investment professionals and, as a part of Franklin Templeton’s larger organization, collaborates with the firm’s Local Asset Management teams around the world. 
 
The Research Associate will work under the guidance of a Senior Research Analyst and will closely engage with a small team comprised of other Analysts, Traders, Portfolio Administrators and Portfolio Managers. This position presents a unique opportunity to work one-on-one with multiple PhD economists in a non-academic setting. 
 
Essential duties and responsibilities include:
  • Provide detailed macroeconomic, sovereign credit, and political analysis.
  • Monitor current market developments within a region of the globe.
  • Make investment recommendations relating to macroeconomic dynamics, interest rates, exchange rates, and sovereign debt, over time.
  • Interact with researchers from top banks, portfolio clients, and high-level government officials.  Coordinate and draft both internal and external communications.
  • Must be willing to travel internationally, if required.

We are seeking candidates with the following qualifications:
  • Must be a US citizen or Green Card holder.
  • A strong academic background with, at minimum, a Bachelor's degree.
  • Working knowledge of one or more languages besides English.
  • Experience living, traveling, or studying abroad.
  • A solid understanding of macroeconomics and politics.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • No prior experience in finance is required, but should be comfortable with expressing quantitative concepts.
  • Capacity to work in a team-oriented and diverse environment.
