Assistant Director, Residence Life #497878

Reporting to the Director of Housing and Residence Life, the Assistant Director for Residence Life position is a 12-month live-in position, which reports to the Director of Housing & Residence Life and is an essential member of the central staff. 

The Assistant Director for Residence Life delivers a comprehensive residential experience to
residents of a 500-bed residence hall on the campus of Lamar University. This includes direct supervision of a student staff of Resident Assistants and Desk Assistants; planning and executing quality residence hall programming; promoting community interaction and student engagement; adjudicating student conduct cases; and responding to emergency and crisis situations.
 
The Assistant Director will supervise a Residence Director who manages a 500-bed residence hall.
For Cardinal Village halls, the Assistant Director will implement and monitor academic initiatives designed to support and retain students to the University.

The Assistant Director will assist with RA staff recruitment, selection, and training development; provide support to RAs with conflict mediation and professional development; assessing RA job performances; coordinating RA programming; assisting with facilities management and fire drills; coordinating monthly health and safety inspections; participating in the on-call rotation.
 
Adjudicate first-level student conduct cases as designated by the Dean of Students and or Director of Housing & Residence Life.

Create and maintain an environment conducive to diversity, inclusivity, and respect. 

Empower RA staff to mediate roommate conflicts, serving as a resource in the establishment of roommate contract agreements to help effectively resolve conflict.
 
Facilitate the move-in, move-out, and room change processes. Monitor and maintain an in-hall RA duty rotation system.
 
Conduct thorough room-to-room summer maintenance inspections, maintaining an accurate, working knowledge of room statuses.
 
Prefer understanding and experience with StarRez and Maxient.
 
Knowledge of student development theory and experience applying theory to practice in a on-campus experience.

Job Conditions:

• Normally, 8-5 pm MF, at times evening/weekend, move-in and move-out of residents.

• Participate in a weekly on-call rotation providing direction and support to manage, providing crisis response as necessary which could be at night.

• Respond to emergencies and other unexpected events which disrupt the operation and management of the community. Identify and respond to situations having the potential to escalate.

• Provide follow up to concerns through personal contact with students, parents, faculty, administrators and other stakeholders to resolve problems, answer questions and clarify policy.

  • Master’s degree in college student personnel, higher education administration, or related field.
  • Two years full-time professional experience in working in a Housing and/or Residence Life program in higher education.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and similar programs.

Must meet the physical requirements of the position, which will include the ability to move between and within the residence hall, community and possible lifting of up to 40 lbs.
