Cognitive Neuroscience Internship

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is offering a Post-Bachelor's, Post-Master's or Postdoctoral internship at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

What will I be doing?

You will join a community of scientists and researchers in an effort to develop your scientific and technical knowledge in the field of neuroscience.

Within the Neurobiology team, research is conducted to understand the biological mechanisms that affect cognitive performance, utilizing physiological and behavioral testing to examine the neurobiological changes that occur following treatment. Current research projects within the laboratory include a study on neural modulation via vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) and a study on intranasal peptide administration for stress resiliency. Both projects are designed to understand the biological mechanisms (e.g. gene expression and cell signaling pathways) by which brain function is modulated.

Why should I apply?

This research opportunity will allow you to gain hands-on experience to complement your education and support your academic and professional goals. Along the way, you will engage in activities and research in several areas including, but not limited to:

  • Learning how to apply tools and technologies in cognitive science in military applications for Airman performance improvement.
  • Learning to develop research studies using animal models to generalize human cognitive processes.
  • Gaining experience in designing experiments, collecting data in the laboratory and communicating research findings through publications and presentations.

Under the guidance of a mentor, you may take part in training personnel to strengthen your knowledge of scientific management.

Where will I be located?

Dayton, Ohio

What is the anticipated start date?

AFRL is ready to make appointments immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

What is the appointment length?

Appointments are initially for one year with the option to extend the appointment for up to four additional years, contingent upon project needs and funding availability.

What are the benefits?

Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by AFRL. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

  • Health Insurance Supplement. Participants are eligible to purchase health insurance through ORISE.
  • Relocation Allowance
  • Training and Travel Allowance
