Lab Instructor - Organic Chemistry

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 

Department Summary & Job Purpose:
The position is for a designated Organic Laboratory Instructor in the Chemistry Department and will consist of 4 laboratory sessions per week.
Core Job Duties and Responsibilities: 
• Teach four afternoon laboratory sections of organic chemistry per week
• Assist in preparing materials for the laboratory
• Supervise, coordinate, and mentor student laboratory instructors and graders 
Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree in chemistry is required and an advanced degree welcome. Applicants should possess laboratory teaching experience, including familiarity with standard manipulative, preparative, chromatographic and spectroscopic methods.
Preferred Qualifications: Interested candidates should have a passion for laboratory teaching and experience mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion.
 
Physical Demands: 
• Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
• Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
• Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
• Sufficient clarity of speech required includes those which permit the employee to discern verbal instructions and communicate effectively in person and by telephone.
• Employee talks in front of large groups of people on a daily basis.
• Employee speaks with students and other faculty daily by telephone, e-mail, or in person on a daily basis.
Working Conditions: 
• Employee works in laboratory environments with a wide range of hazardous materials.
• Time will be spent in the laboratory, some prep and clean-up will be necessary.
