Post Masters Research Associate - Marine Energy Project Coordinator Intern

Overview
The Coastal Sciences Division, headquartered at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Sequim Marine Research Operations on Washington State's Olympic Peninsula, is the Department of Energy's only marine research laboratory. This unique facility and the capabilities of its researchers deliver science and technology that is critical to the nation's energy, environmental and security future.
 
Building upon a history of research related to marine and coastal resources, environmental chemistry, water resources modeling, ecotoxicology and biotechnology—and more recently, national and homeland security—the MSL is emerging as a leader in these three areas:
  • Enabling sustainable development of ocean energy
  • Understanding and mitigating long-term impacts of human activities, including climate change, on marine resources
  • Protecting coastal environments from security threats 

Responsibilities
This role will support project science communications activities and provide project coordination for a Department of Energy Water Power Technologies Office Project. The project’s mission is to research environmental monitoring technologies to reduce barriers associated with testing and installing marine energy devices.
 
This is a unique opportunity for someone interested in developing a career in ocean-related research project management and science communication. The position will provide experiential education with the opportunity to support marine energy research projects enabling efficient communication and collaboration strategies across a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and functional groups.
 
A successful project coordination intern is an individual who is an excellent project planner with the ability to develop and maintain strong team relationships under changing priorities and quarterly driven milestones. The candidate will work closely with the project manager and communication task leader to support the project through major milestones and goals and spotlight and disseminate research success in the field of marine energy environmental monitoring. The candidate will be actively participating in the development of detailed project plans, tracking project plan execution against established targets, developing written project content for outreach and engagement activities, and organizing and tracking audio-visual content metrics for monthly reporting. They will promote a culture of cooperation, execution excellence, and cross-functional problem-solving to enable a high-performing team.
Applicants should have a science background, such as biology or ecology, with strong written, oral, and presentation communication skills.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Organize, attend and participate in project execution meetings
  • Document meeting minutes, key decisions and follow-up on action items
  • Maintain execution project/program schedule, track progress and generate project timeline
  • Work closely with the project manager to identify next execution steps and support operational activities, issue resolution
  • Work closely with communications task leader to develop science communication content and track progress of communication activities

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Candidates must have received a Master’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. 
  • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 required.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Technical and non-technical writing skills
  • Exceptional verbal, and presentation skills
  • Experience with social media engagement (personal or professional)
  • Interest in science communication and project management for ocean-related research
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and associated applications
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent time management and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated team player with a “can-do” attitude

Work location can be either Sequim or Seattle campus.
