JOB TITLE: School Nurse
SALARY: According to placement on current salary schedule.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 9 months
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the procedures for evaluating certified staff
REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Special Education
Assistant Director of Special Education Principal
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
  1. Bachelor Degree in nursing from an accredited institution of higher education
  2. Completion of an approved program for school nurses
Experience:
  1. Completed field experience and/or a supervised practicum as prescribed by the preparing institution
Certificates/Licenses:
  1. Valid Colorado Registered Nurse License
  2. Valid Colorado Driver License
  3. CDE Special Services license for a BSN/RN

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Interprets health history information, medical reports and records, nursing observations and test results to meet student health needs
  2. Serves as a District resource for SPED staffings to record and report health and social history, physical assessments, make home visits and follow-ups, and develop a health care plan for SPED students as assigned by the Director of Special Education
  3. Administers medication and provides invasive procedures, as needed, under the Nurse Practice Act
  4. Responsible for supervising and training District health techs according to the Delegatory Clause of the Colorado Nurse Practice Act as directed by the Director of Special Education
  5. Works as a team with school and District personnel, administration and other health agencies to provide the best delivery of health related needs
  6. Assists the principal in developing a school wide health care program to meet the school health needs of all students by implementing Federal, state and local rules, guidelines and procedures
  7. Provides health services for special education students including but not limited to, feeding, changing diapers, catheterizing
  8. Assesses student health status using data collected from student, parent, school staff and health care provider
  9. Conducts physical assessment, counseling and conferencing to determine the physical, social and mental status of the student in a crisis situation.
  10. Incorporates knowledgeable of social health problems including nutrition, child neglect/abuse, violence, drug/alcohol abuse, pregnancy, HIV/AIDS and other communicable diseases
  11. Incorporates knowledge of legal rights and due process for children with special needs 12.Trains, delegates and supervises other school personnel to implement health care procedures
  12. including Colorado School Medicaid Reimbursement Program as assigned
  13. Participates and provides in-service training as assigned by the Director of Special Education
  14. Maintains all records and completes all information necessary for the District data management system or required by state and federal agencies
  15. Reports to parents, school personnel, physicians and other agencies on special education student health matters following confidentiality guidelines and procedures as set by FERPA
  16. Serves as a resource, instructor and consultant in the area of health education
  17. Consults and advises in the implementation of the policy on Exclusion and Readmission of students in connection with infectious and contagious diseases
  18. Provides direct health services for individuals or small groups; and provides classroom health education instruction to develop and encourage a healthy lifestyle
  19. Acts as a liaison between school, community, health agencies, care providers, parents and students to improve adherence to student health care plans as assigned
  20. Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively, get along with co-workers, and deal with colleagues in a professional manner
  21. Demonstrates a positive attitude towards change
  22. Performs such other tasks as may, from time to time, be assigned

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger; handle and feel; reach with hands and arms; taste and smell; and talk and hear. The employee may also need to stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee is frequently required to exert average or above average physical activities in the Center Based Special Education programs.
