Applied Research Scientist I_Cancer Epidemiology

Summary
The Applied Research Scientist will be working closely with Dr. Jennifer Permuth, Vice Chair of Research in Moffitt’s Department of Gastrointestinal Oncology. Dr. Permuth is a faculty member in the Departments of Cancer Epidemiology and Gastrointestinal Oncology and has an active portfolio involving multidisciplinary, multi-institutional research, primarily in pancreatic cancer. The Applied Research Scientist will be responsible for helping to manage Dr. Permuth's ongoing research projects related to pancreatic cancer and other malignancies both at Moffitt Cancer Center and at collaborating institutions and would play a key role in preparing for future initiatives. The Applied Research Scientist will also assist with research needs of other faculty within the Gastrointestinal Oncology Department. This non-tenure track position will have ample opportunities for authorship of peer-reviewed publications and other career-enhancing activities.
 
Position Highlights
  • Develops, initiates, and managed protocols and oversees day-to-day activities of multiple studies.
  • Writes and prepares drafts of manuscripts for a variety of research studies.
  • Independently conducts statistical analyses for observational studies.
  • Supervises trainees and staff.
  • Generates scientific and budgetary sections of grant applications with guidance.

The Ideal Candidate
  • A Ph.D. in epidemiology, public health, or a closely-aligned field
  • Has research experience in the academic and/or clinical setting, preferably in oncology.
  • Has database management experience.
  • Demonstrates statistical programming experience, including proficiency in SAS or R.
  • Is a critical, independent, and creative thinker
  • Is professional, personable, organized, conscientious, and works well as a member of a team.
  • Has excellent oral and written communication skills. 
  • Manuscript writing and grant writing experience is required.

Responsibilities
  • Oversees day-to-day study progress on ongoing studies.
  • Works closely with the principal investigator and collaborators to perform research and related support activities including (a) development, implementation, and management of research projects; (b) preparation of drafts of regulatory protocols and progress reports, manuscripts, budgets, and grant applications and (c) presentation of research at scientific meetings.
  • Assists with overseeing the work of study staff and trainees.
  • Data management and preliminary statistical analysis.
  • Maintains membership and regularly attends appropriate professional associations, conferences, workshops, lectures, and seminars as supported by the overseeing investigator.

Credentials and Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in a discipline relevant to Population Science (e.g., epidemiology, biostatistics, psychology, internal medicine) or related field.
  • Postdoctoral experience preferred, but not required.
