SPED Paraprofessional

Position Summary:
 
Assist special education teachers to provide for the instructional needs of students with disabilities. Assist in the implementation of classroom programs, including behavior management and instructional programs. Assist individual and small groups of students with their assignments. Work under the general supervision of the principal and immediate direction of the Special Education teacher
 
Qualifications:
 
Education/Certification  
  • Educational Aide certification required (must be able to obtain soon after employment)
  • Meet one of the following minimum requirements:
  • 48 hours of college credit
  • Pass all sections of the THEA
  • Associate’s academic degree or equivalent from an accredited College
  • Bachelor’s degree from a University (preferred)
  • Teacher Certification (preferred)
Experience
  • 6+ months of experience working in a Public or Charter school (preferred)
  • Experience working with students with disabilities (preferred)
  • Related experience or training (preferred)
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Passion for students, especially students with disabilities
  • Ability and patience to work interactively with students, especially students with disabilities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills  
  • Strong computer skills to implement multiple and diverse programs
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships
Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Assist the teacher to prepare instructional materials and
  • Assist in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom
  • Assist with inventory, care, and maintenance of materials and equipment 
  • Assist teacher to keep administrative records and prepare required reports 
  • Assist in the implementation of ARD identified accommodations/modifications
  • Conduct instructional activities as directed by the special education teacher for individual students or small groups of students 
  • Assume responsibility for learning how to work with student’s individual needs
  • Help supervise special education students throughout the school day, inside and outside the classroom; this may include some campus duties
  • Keep special education teacher informed of special education student progress/needs 
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned
  • Perform special projects, during and after normal business hours, and other duties as assigned
