Medical Technologist - Comparative Medicine

This is a full-time, benefits eligible position located within the Department of Comparative Medicine, located in Bastrop, Texas.

SUMMARY

To perform the analytical methodology employed in one or more of the following sections in the clinical laboratory: Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Parasitology, Urinalysis, Blood Bank, Microbiology, and Serology. Responsible for work involving maintenance of quality control and instruments for the production of reliable analytical data on laboratory specimens in one or more sections of the clinical laboratories.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Technical Support of Clinical Pathology Laboratory
With direction, performs QC, QC analysis, equipment operation and maintenance, and testing in all areas of the laboratory and specimen processing. Follows SOPs for each section and uses proper techniques for preparing reagents, dilutions and controls per SOP or manufacturer guidelines. Record temperature and document logs. Coordinates with staff on the collection and reporting of tests and performs testing in a timely manner.

Administrative Duties
Assist system owner with supply inventory monitoring, report QC and equipment issues to system owner or laboratory manager. Review SOPs and study protocols and provide input. Participates in continuing education. Serve as the resource for animal resource program and veterinarian.
Participates in GLP (Good Laboratory Practice) and Research Studies
Perform appropriate testing and documentation per specific protocols or SOPs. Completes in- house GLP training and continuing GLP training as needed. Maintains equipment and QC following GLP and SOP guidelines with good documentation practices.
Miscellaneous Duties
Assist with packaging and shipping of various samples following regulations. Rotate in weekend and holiday on call duties. May require occasional work after hour or weekend. Perform other duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor’s degree -OR- Bachelor's degree in Molecular Genetic Technology
-OR - completion of an accredited Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science program.
Preferred Education: None.
Certification: None.

Preferred Certification: One of the following: Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP). Clinical Laboratory Scientist by the National Certifying Agency (NCA).
Experience: With Bachelor's degree, one-year clinical laboratory experience.
Preferred Experience: One year clinical laboratory experience.
Onsite Presence: Is Required.
