R&D Engineer

We are currently seeking an Research and Development Engineer to join OFS Labs, our corporate R&D facility located in Somerset NJ. The successful candidate will be part of a team to develop new types of optical fibers, fabrication processes and measurement tools. This will require the ability to solve technical problems, both independently and as part of a team, in developing new products and new manufacturing processes. Significant aspects of the position include designing and conducting experiments; analyzing data; design and control of equipment; and troubleshooting both R&D and manufacturing processes and equipment.
 
In this role, the candidate will support fiber fabrication processes for multiple programs and maintain an active R&D program to advance optical fiber science and technology.
 
Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
 
  • Be a critical asset in establishing and leading an R&D program
  • Oversee the optical fiber draw process including management of a fiber draw tower
  • Oversee development and continuous improvement for optical fiber manufacturing, including cost reduction, performance improvement, and production efficiency
  • Manage, maintain and upgrade mechanical and electronics facilities for optical fiber manufacture and testing, including automation, data logging and fabrication records
  • Fabricate and characterize optical fibers
  • Be a strong team player with openness and willingness to contribute towards group goals and achievements
  • Perform other related duties as required by management 
 
 
 
 
Key qualifications include:
 
  • PhD, MS or Bachelor’s Degree in Physics, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, or similar discipline
  • 5-10 years experience in related technology preferred
  • Experience with fabrication, operation and troubleshooting of hardware, processing equipment and diagnostic tools
  • Ability to problem-solve independently and proactively
  • Exceptional documentation and presentation skills
  • Drive to work autonomously
