Coordinator of Health Services

The Coordinator of Health Services provides proactive leadership and support for our Health Services staff by developing consistent systems and procedures to support best school health service practices, as well as problem-solving when challenges arise. They uphold professional standards, the state Nurse Practice Act, and other state and local statutes and regulations applicable to school nursing practice; and adhere to district policies and administrative guidelines.

The Coordinator of Health Services strengthens and facilitates the educational process by modifying or removing health-related barriers to learning by promoting an optimal level of wellness for students and staff. The coordinator assumes responsibility for appropriate assessment, planning, and intervention, evaluation, and/or referral activities. They serve as the direct link between physicians, families, and community agencies to assure access and continuity of health care for students

Qualifications 
Required: 
● Bachelor’s degree in nursing. 
● Three years of successful nursing experience, preferably in school nursing and/or pediatric ambulatory. 
● Valid Wisconsin license as a registered nurse. 
● Certification in CPR. 
● Candidates should have a commitment to equity, social justice, and culturally and linguistically responsive practices. 
● Valid Wisconsin driver’s license.

Preferred: 
● Master’s degree in nursing. 
● Five years of successful school nursing and/or health services leadership. 
● Bilingual candidates (Spanish/English) are strongly preferred.

Primary Job Functions 
● Lead a comprehensive school health program: coordinate nursing actions that promote, maintain, or restore health, prevent illness, & effect rehabilitation; establish procedures for daily service delivery and emergency services; provide a reporting and recording system for continuity of care and program accountability. 
● Recommend and implement Board policies and procedures regarding district health services. Assures that such policies and related procedures adhere to legal and regulatory requirements and ethical standards of nursing practice. 
● Assist administration in the selection and assignment of health staff. 
● Contribute to nursing and school health services through innovations in theory and practice, and participation in research when appropriate. 
● Analyze information about the health and developmental status of students in a systematic and continuous manner. 
● Oversee the documentation of immunization according to the Wisconsin Immunization Law and submit all required reports to local and state health departments according to the State required timeline. 
● Serve as a resource to school staff, students, and parents/guardians regarding health education and specific health conditions and coordinate the development of nursing care plans with specific goals and interventions delineating school-nursing actions unique to students’ needs. 
● Implement a system for the identification of students with chronic and/or acute health care needs; work with the Child Find program; direct health services staff to review student enrollment forms that contain health information. 
● Provide professional development and training, support, consultation, and supervision to school nurses and nursing assistants (incl. that required to comply with State Practice Act & other legal considerations). 
● Implement communicable disease control in the school, including monitoring, surveillance, and participating in disease prevention and outbreak management within the school. Communicates and consults with Dane County Public Health Department for communicable disease control. 
● Serve as the contact person for the district's employee blood-borne pathogen exposure control plan. 
● Oversee and manage procurement and distribution of equipment and supplies in health offices. 
● Assure that school health services and activities are appropriately documented.
