Under the direct supervision of the Nurse Supervisor/Health Department Manager and the direction of the Women Infant and Children (WIC) Program Director for the Region, the Licensed Practical Nurse (Nutrition and Education Specialist) will follow the WIC Regional Program guidance to perform WIC certifications, breastfeeding support, individual low risk nutrition, health promotion, and group nutrition education classes. All services will follow the policy and procedures of the agency, to provide customer service and to maintain strict confidentiality. 

Services:
-Provide WIC Certifications including health history, anthropometrics, hemoglobin or hematocrit testing, evaluation of risk, status, prescription of WIC food package, documentation, and high-risk referrals following program standards and protocols. Provide and document individual nutrition education counseling and follow-up for participants with low-risk medical conditions.

-Plan, conduct, and evaluate group nutrition education classes using the facilitated learning process in accordance with WIC guidelines and agency policies. Document all nutrition education contact and assist to perform hemoglobin controls as needed.

-Provide assistance to families with infants on contract and List I formulas including education, dispensing, and monitoring as assigned. Refer participants on List II and metabolic formulas to the Registered Dietician (RD) according to the WIC guidelines. 

-Provide breastfeeding promotion and support to pregnant and breastfeeding women. Screen and refer pregnant women and infants to the Breastfeeding Coordinator according to the Referral Guideline. Issue and monitor breast pumps and breastfeeding supplies.

-Provide consultation and technical assistance to other members of the multidisciplinary health care team and community in areas related to normal nutrition, including health promotion and disease prevention. Participate as a member of the multi-disciplinary WIC Team in clinic and class scheduling, caseload monitoring, and outreach. Work with other program staff and discipline to enhance integration and quality of service.

Immunization Program:
-Review immunization status, administer age appropriate vaccines per standing orders. Order, store, and process vaccines in accordance with DHEC policy and procedures. Administer vaccines according to agency policies and as stipulated within the Nurse Practice Act. Document care provided in accordance with agency policy/procedure. Discuss appropriate findings with an Registered Nurse directly within the Immunization Division.

Training and Development:
-Follow the established guidelines for customer service and cultural competency to include annual review of WIC Civil Rights and Customer Services.   

This position is located within the York County Health Department.

 


 

 

Minimum and Additional Requirements

 

State Minimum Requirements: Positions in this classification require licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing.  Graduation from an accredited school of practical nursing and related experience. 

Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Driving Record:  If this position requires the applicant to possess a valid driver’s license to operate a state vehicle or personal vehicle, any applicant being considered in the final stages of selection for the position will be required to provide a certified copy of a 10-year driving record.
