Social Isolation Prevention Advocate (AmeriCorps)

The Social Isolation Prevention Advocate will conduct outreach to older adults and engage in a variety of tasks that aim to address social isolation issues. The member will work closely with other Broome County Office for Aging staff and support multiple departments. The Advocate will engage in the following social isolation prevention activities assigned to by his/her supervisor: Identifying older adults who are socially isolated, Friendly calling, surveying, virtual programming, respite/friendly visiting, Meals on Wheels deliveries, senior center support and adult day program support efforts.

Please note, this is a Public Health AmeriCorps position, not a traditional job or internship. Members will serve in-person at Broome County Office for Aging in Binghamton, NY. A term of service involves 900 total hours of service throughout a 10-11 month period at 20-25 hours/week. Members receive a living allowance of $11,000 (divided into biweekly payments throughout the term) and an education award of $3,447.50 (to be used on qualified education expenses).

Required: 

  • COVID vaccination (original shot(s) and at least one booster)
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Personal vehicle (mileage will be compensated)
  • A minimum 1 year of experience in program development and/or community education, providing direct service, outreach, and/or social justice work is preferred.
     

Desired skills/knowledge/interests:

  • Passion/interest in working with older adults that may be from underserved populations and diverse populations
  • Excellent verbal communication in person or by phone as well as excellent written communication
  • Responding to the public in a positive, professional manner
  • Establishing and maintaining appropriate records, reports and correspondence
  • Maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers and community partners and contacts
  • Working independently with multiple priorities
  • Using computer programs and technology such as word processing, internet, publishing, databases and social media
  • Willingness to work with older adults in their homes or at public locations
  • Organizational skills that result in consistent, high-quality performance.
