Research and Development Engineer - Jacksonville, IL

Your Role:

The R&D Engineer will lead in design, development and commercialization of machine and process changes.  This role will have the opportunity to transform their creative ideas into new products or processes for manufacturing.  The R&D Engineer will enjoy having the opportunity to influence the business through their ideas, research, and development of solutions to increase manufacturing performance across new products, safety, quality, process, automation and productivity.  This role will collaborate with engineering, operations, marketing, and the business team to deliver results that can be seen at all major retail stores. You will have the opportunity to:

  • Coordinate process development and commercialization activities especially for automation in all areas of the Hefty Business unit including waste and storage bags as well as the three different sites. 
  • Active projects include large capital investments at two different sites and an expansion opportunity.  
  • Identify and commercialize new automation opportunities. 
  • Startup new or modified bag making conversion and PE blown film extrusion manufacturing equipment. 
  • Apply statistical analysis techniques to trial data and develop key observations and conclusions. 
  • Collaborate on improvements to production methods, implementing new production techniques, and determination of manufacturing capacities. 
  • Ability to understand control sequences of operations and work directly with electrical engineers and technicians to troubleshoot equipment controls problems and achieve efficient operation of new or modified equipment. 
  • Travel to other sites or vendor locations in performance of duties. Travel is project dependent and ranges up to 50%. 
  • No shift work required.

Requirements

We need you to have:

  • BS in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical preferred) required. 
  • Experience with automation design and integration. 
  • Ability to travel up to 50%.
  • Proficient in MS Office with high proficiency in Excel.  
  • Basic understanding of 3D drawing software, solid modeling, or heat transfer modeling.  
  • Basic understanding of statistical techniques and methods (DOE, SPC, etc). 
  • Basic understanding of Lean manufacturing techniques and methods. 
  • Solid project management capabilities with the ability to organize and manage multiple projects simultaneously from origin through execution. 

Icing on the cake:

  • 5+ years of applicable experience preferred.  
  • Familiarity with physical and analytical test methods for polymer films and resin is desirable.
