Medical Director

JOB SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for the medical assessment and care of patients by collaborating with the Nurse Manager- Health Services & PI and ARNPs and providing consultations and referrals between medical staff.  This position also provides on-call responsibilities.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assesses patients physical health on admission and throughout their hospital stay including physical examinations, lab evaluations, x-rays and EKG. 

Provides outside referrals as indicated. 

Ensures accurate and thorough documentation of all assessment. 

Provides clinical oversight of assessment and reassessment, ongoing provision of care activities, and completion of all associated documentation by ARNPs.

Provides on-call coverage for after-hours care of patients.

Treats medical problems including pharmacotherapy, minor surgical procedures such as sutures and I&D, IV placement, arthrocentesis, lumbar puncture, proctoscopy, needle aspiration (superficial).

Makes referrals for tests and consultations and follows-up on results and recommendations.

Monitors the ongoing care of the medical condition of patients and provides consultations to the psychiatric staff oversees the Axis III portion of the recovery plan. 

Provides education on the medical diagnoses to patients, and their families. 

Collaborates and communicates with staff in other disciplines in an effective and professional manner. 

Understands and complies with special precautions, disaster and fire safety procedures, and abuse reporting.

Is knowledgeable about care and treatment needs of patients of different ages.  Provides individualized care and treatment that is consistent with/sensitive to the age and life span developmental needs of each patients.

Must be able to apply principles of critical thinking to a variety of practical and emergent situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may call for deviations.

Must be able to apply sound judgment beyond a specific set of instructions and apply knowledge to different factual situations.

Must be able to work under stress on a regular or continuous basis.

Continues professional development through in-service education, workshops, conferences and self-study necessary to maintain current knowledge applicable to the position.

Is sensitive to cultural diversity issues, treats patients as an individual, and considers the culture of the patients when providing care and treatment. 

Participates in performance improvement activities, Medical Staff Organization (MSO), hospital-wide committees and Task Forces.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE AND LICENSING: 

Education

Medical doctorate (MD) from an accredited university.

Experience

Two (2) years post residency clinical experience in an inpatient setting, psychiatric experience referred. 

Licenses/Certifications

Licensed in the state of employment. Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and applicable certifications. Board certified or eligible in internal or family medicine. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND CONDITIONS:

Works in a clean well-lit environment with fluctuating temperatures. Requires substantial periods of work utilizing a computer, monitor, keyboard, and mouse.  Requires lifting and carrying equipment and supplies weighing up to 35 pounds; requires pushing and pulling equipment and supplies weighing up to 75 pounds; requires walking and standing; requires sitting; requires the ability to negotiate stairs; requires the ability to lift patients in and out of bed, wheelchair, and/or stretcher; requires the ability to reach or bend frequently; requires visual acuity and manual dexterity to operate equipment. Potential for exposure to blood and/or body substances and hazardous materials requiring observance of Standard Precautions and safe handling practices.

This job primarily operates independently in a facility. This job is performed in a correctional facility, client site or counseling center including minimum, medium or maximum security levels.  Employees are exposed to some level of risk and/or harm by inmates including exposure to blood borne pathogens.  Employee is expected to work in accordance with all security rules and regulations to minimize the risk of danger and/or harm to themselves or other employees.  This position may require travel depending on specific needs.
