Ogden Elementary Library Media Specialist: 2024-2025 School Year

JOB BRIEF: 

  • Organizing and directing the library information program; identifying and defining the work to be done to meet goals and objectives; facilitating integrated instruction; sharing the commitment to education. 

LOCATION: Ogden Elementary 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Master’s degree with at least 24 hours of library media (or in progress). 
  • Certificate for teaching, and school library endorsement, valid on the level being served. 
  • Successful school experience in library and/or classroom. 
  • Must pass a background check.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT/SALARY:

RETIREMENT:

  • USD 383 makes monthly contributions to a 403(b)-retirement account for all certified and eligible employees. 
  • KPERS (Kansas Public Employees Retirement System): 6% monthly staff contribution with a matching 6% monthly employer contribution. Vested after five years. 

TECHNOLOGY:

  • District provided devices - iPad, laptop and/or desktop for certified staff.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Formulate immediate and long-range goals and purpose, with a plan of implementation and evaluation to achieve them. 
  • Utilize the district’s adopted selection policy for all library materials. 
  • Work within the channels and structure of the school district administration to maintain communication with students, staff, and all library stakeholders. 
  • Establish a public relations program that will effectively inform both school and community of the information program activities and services available to students and staff via the library. 
  • Maintain professional resources for teachers, inform them about new materials, and encourage their involvement in purchasing decisions. 
  • Select, train, schedule, supervise and evaluate library support personnel, student assistants and volunteers (when applicable). 
  • Organize and maintain reports of media acquisitions, circulation, etc., for inventory, maintenance, and certification purposes. 
  • Establish a plan for acquisition, weeding and replacement of all library materials, including books, AV, and instructional technology. 
  • Plan and execute a maintenance program for material and multimedia equipment, and work with the district IT department to do so. 
  • Be current on trends in school library services, the changing landscape of the school library, instructional technology, and educational technology. 
  • The candidate must be fluent in several types of technology applications, devices, and web related tools that can be integrated into the library curriculum. 
  • Organize the storage and handling of multimedia for convenience, availability, and effective use by students and staff. 
  • Investigate and evaluate products, services, and equipment available for purchase to benefit the students and staff that the library serves. 
  • Coordinate daily operation of building library information centers. 
  • Prepare and manage an annual budget for the Library Information Center and submit orders to the director of Library & Instructional Media Services and Central Library Services. 
  • Introduce and publicize resources and prepare demonstrations, bibliographies, lists and indexes of these resources. 
  • Have a working knowledge of national and state legislation affecting the school library information program and apply this to the library information center operations. 
  • Keep educationally and professionally informed by participating in professional organizations, course work, workshops, conferences, and by reading professional materials. 
  • Work to coordinate resources and activities with area libraries of all levels (public, academic, etc.) 
  • Prepare annual report for building administrator and Director of Library & Instructional Media Services. 
  • Participate in curriculum planning, production, and use of teaching/learning materials. 
  • Assist community of learners in the planning of production and use of teaching/learning materials. 
  • Regularly collaborate with building teachers and staff on a variety of lesson topics and curriculum, including but not limited to; Literacy, Information Literacy, KCCRS, NGSS, MTSS, and Digital Citizenship. 
  • Be informed and knowledgeable about philosophy, curriculum instruction, and total educational program. 
  • Plan and implement integrated instruction with teachers on a regular basis and maintain an active library schedule that encourages use by learners during the normal school day. 
  • Provide orientation of staff and students through in-service programs. 
  • Provide instruction in use of library information center and its resources to the community of learners. 
  • Provide reading guidance and implement strategies to instill lifelong learning/reading. 
  • Convey enthusiasm for books and reading for all learners through specific activities and individual guidance promoting the development of reading skills and appreciation. 
  • Attend faculty meeting and other appropriate staff meetings. 
  • Promote cultural enrichment activities. 
  • Other duties as assigned by administration.  

 

EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with the Board of Education’s policy on evaluation of certified personnel.
