Milwaukee Public Schools Special Education Teacher Resident

The Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) & UW-Madison Special Education Teacher Residency Program (TRP) is a 14-month clinical teacher education program designed to prepare, support, and place the future generation of special education teachers in MPS.   

TRP Residents complete one full year as teaching residents (full-time in the classroom). During this time, they work closely with their assigned mentor teachers to support student learning and academic growth. Mentor teachers are highly experienced and skilled special educators. TRP Residents simultaneously complete graduate level coursework at UW-Madison and all licensure requirements to become certified special education teachers. TRP Residents are offered a generous living stipend and have access to additional financial support as UW-Madison graduate students. Residents agree to teach special education for three full school years in MPS after their Residency year. The ideal candidate will be passionate about working with and making a difference for students and have a high interest in investing in their own learning and in student learning.   

Responsibilities  

  • Work full-time as a teaching Resident in an MPS school in partnership with an assigned teacher Mentor.  
  • Support all aspects of academic instruction for students.   
  • Prepare and deliver effective instruction for students.  
  • Engage in cycles of learning and inquiry with a commitment to improve your teaching practice.  
  • Successfully complete all required coursework to earn a Master’s degree in special education and requirements for teacher licensure.  
  • Engage actively in virtual and in-person professional development groups.  
  • Uphold the highest level of professionalism in all aspects of work as a teacher Resident.  

Required Qualifications  

  • Previously earned bachelor’s degree in any subject area
  • Seeking initial special education teaching license
  • U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency Status

  Preferred Qualifications   

  • Experience and/or demonstrated interest in working with students who have disabilities.
  • Demonstrated success in working with diverse people and teams, especially young people and their families.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • High level of organization and competence, self-motivation.
  • Flexibility, creativity and high level of professionalism in all interactions.
  • Experience and comfort using technology as a teaching and learning tool.

  Salary and Benefits

  • Generous living stipend of at least $49,836
  • Full academic year teaching residency in Milwaukee Public Schools

  • Graduate coursework offered at convenient times, leading to a master’s degree from UW-Madison
