Position Summary 

 

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, to develop students' physical skills and abilities, strength, agility, poise, coordination, and teamwork; to develop students' understanding of the importance of exercise to physical and mental well-being; and to motivate students to work towards, physical fitness, hygiene, and good health.

 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

 

  • Develops and administers Physical Education classes consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Teaches knowledge of and develops skills and abilities in physical fitness, rhythm and dance, coordination and agility, exercise, and sports.
  • Develops students' concepts in leadership, teamwork, responsibility, and social skills; provides a safe and optimal learning environment; and provides appropriate feedback regarding student progress, expectations, and goals.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student growth and progress in physical educational activities, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops, and professional meetings or conducting research.
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement, and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Assists in coordinating extra-curricular activities, including student performances, assembles, and athletic events.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensures that student conduct conforms to the school's standards and district policies and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially within physical education and grade level, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Selects and requisitions appropriate instructional aids, supplies, and equipment and maintains inventory records.
  • Inspects equipment and field areas to ensure they are in excellent and safe working order.

 

LESSON PLANS/PREPARATION/EXPECTATIONS

 

  • Leave complete lesson plans for the following day in their classroom before leaving school each day

 

  • Be willing to accept extra assignments before and after school and to cooperate with all school personnel in advancing the education of the children in this School District

 

  • Responsible for instruction planning, including but not limited to providing written lesson plans and preparation by the objectives of the instructional program and the RIMSD41 guidelines. 
  • Leave complete lesson plans for the following day in their classroom before leaving school each day
  • All teachers shall provide their principal lesson plans for a week in advance when requested

 

SAFETY:

 

  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas

 

  • Follow the district’s safety guidelines
  • Teach your students to be accountable by knowing what to do in a natural disaster or an emergency. 
  • Create a safe and supportive environment that will protect students from injury
  • Be responsible for non-classroom supervision of pupils and student conduct in any area of the building

 

EVALUATE (students):

  • Measure student progress  to encourage the mastery of school district/state/national standards
  • Evaluate each pupil's growth in physical/health skills, knowledge, and contributions to team sports

COMMUNICATION: 

  • Build relationships with students, staff, and parents
  • Share the responsibility of communicating the educational program to the community through such activities as back-to-school nights, parent conferences, and family nights 
  • Works cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning a balanced physical education program
  • Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs
  • Communicate with parents and other concerned staff members on pupil progress

 

Required Education:

 Bachelor’s degree in physical education 

 

Certifications-Licenses:

  • Professional Educator License (PEL)
  • Endorsement in PE for secondary (9-12)

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 

Physical Demands:

  • Knowledge of current physical education instructional methods and differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
  • Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and the formulation of action plans.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws and regulations regarding education and students, as well as relating to health education.
  • Knowledge of physiology, health and nutrition, biology and biological functions, anatomy, hygiene, exercise, and best ways to promote physical and mental well-being.
  • Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation about performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted during work.
