Center for Wildlife Education

 

Job Summary

 

Under the supervision of the Wildlife Centers Education Coordinator, the Wildlife Specialist will be asked to assist in all aspects of educational programing onsite and offsite. Additionally, the Wildlife Specialist will be asked to assist and support the Curatorial staff in the management of animals.

 

Responsibilities

 

• Assist the Education staff in all areas that support and facilitate the Centers wildlife programs

• Support the Curatorial staff in the management of animals

• Help oversee day-to-day operations of the center and the maintenance of the Centers 18 acres

• Assist in the training and supervising of student workers

• Deliver onsite and offsite education programs to schools, organizations, summer camps and special events

• Conduct flighted raptor demonstrations for onsite and offsite educational presentations

• Assist the Education Coordinator in maintaining/updating educational displays to enhance visitor interpretation of the on-site exhibits and venues

• Assist in the event of emergencies ' weather-related, injury to animals and staff or public, escape of animals from their enclosures, and recover of raptors that fly-off

• Represent the University in interaction with external agencies/groups

 

Required Qualifications

 

Educational Requirements

 

• Post-secondary degree in Biology, Education, Outdoor Recreation or related field

• If applicant does not have a degree in a related field, they may still be considered if they have four (4) years of relevant experience

 

Required Experience

 

• Three (3) years of relevant work experience; includes delivery of programs

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

Additional Preferred Qualifications

 

• General knowledge of all animal phylum and their characteristics, habits, and captive requirements specific to animals at the WL

• Rabies vaccination up to date

 

Preferred Educational Qualifications

 

• Bachelors degree in Biology, Education, Outdoor Recreation or related fields

 

Preferred Experience

 

• Three (3) years of relevant work experience in multiple disciplines that will directly benefit the Wildlife Centers daily operation

 

Proposed Salary

 

$14.86 - $18.17 per hour

 

This is a non-exempt position paid on a biweekly basis.

• Ability to represent the Wildlife Center and University when interacting with external organizations and in a way that aligns with the overall mission and core values of each

• Expectation and capability of learning the educational material, proper handling techniques and professional animal care of all animals used in programs

 

KNOWLEDGE

 

• Adhere to University policies and procedures to meet Institutional goals and support University's mission for student success

• A strong understanding of native fauna and flora in Georgia

 

SKILLS

 

• Effective communication (verbal and written), organizational and human relation skills

• Creative thinking skills that can be used to connect people to wildlife
