Job Summary

Reporting directly to the Executive Counsel, the Assistant University Counsel provides legal advice and counseling to the University through its administrators, faculty, and staff in the course of their duties on behalf of the University. In addition to providing legal counseling to the University on a wide variety of legal issues, other areas of responsibility for the Office of Legal Affairs include administration of the University's grievance and dispute resolution procedures (including conducting investigations), policy interpretation, contract review, and ' in conjunction with the Attorney General ' management of actual or threatened litigation in which the University is involved. Assistant General Counsel positions are intended for attorneys with entry-level experience and developing expertise relevant to higher education law. Assistant General Counsels develop subject matter expertise and foster close working relationships with assigned units.

Responsibilities

• Under supervision, provide legal advice and counseling to University units and departments.
• Conduct contract reviews.
• Respond to Open Records requests.
• Research legal issues.
• Investigate complaints based on membership in a protected class.
• Respond to subpoenas and other judicial orders.

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements

• Juris Doctor degree

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Educational Qualifications

• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school

Preferred Experience

• Two (2) or more years of experience relevant to higher education law
• Strong academic credentials
• Admitted to practice law in the State of Georgia or eligible for admission through reciprocity or passing of the Georgia bar exam within one (1) year of employment

Proposed Salary

$78,706 - $81,500

This is an exempt position paid on a monthly basis.
