Technical Editor

VA 124651 Technical Editor.  Technical editors are professional wordsmiths. You will advise stakeholders on ways to improve readability by checking the style, tone, layout, substance, grammar, and clarity of text and by making appropriate corrections. Your expertise will guide authors through the writing process, style guide usage, and techniques to optimize the impact of original content used in the production of finished intelligence and corporate communications for a variety of audiences. You will examine and comment on technical features of the words, sentences, and minor details and how the author expresses their ideas. Under collective ownership, you will shepherd all facets of writing, editing, review processes, and coordinate projects to successful conclusion. 

Highly Desired: Undergraduate or graduate education in journalism, communications, English, literature, creative writing, applied social sciences, or liberal studies degree with a concentration on writing or marketing from an accredited institution or minimum of 3-5 years of substantial subject-matter or technical knowledge experience. 

  • Takes initiative to manage multiple assignments and adapt to changing client needs.
  • Identifies and resolves challenging problems or issues that often cross organizational boundaries and impact the accomplishment of strategic objectives from technical writing perspective.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, read content, correct spelling, punctuation, and grammatical errors consistent with publication’s style and editorial policies.
  • Review and rewrite text to make it easier for readers to understand and verify facts, classifications and sources cited in material for publication.
  • Advise on, analyze, and support the implementation of feedback mechanisms (quantitative and qualitative) to measure effectiveness of communication.
  • Identifies and applies applicable standards, style guides to provide technical accuracy, compliance, and completeness of content of text and graphics.
