We’re launching transformational initiatives like the CCG Detroit Community Resilience Initiative, the MPSC Renewable Energy Grant, and the Energy Futures Grant. We’re seeking a highly experienced Grants Compliance and Accounting Manager to oversee large-scale federal and state grants ($1M - $20M), ensuring financial integrity, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence
About the Role:
The Grants Compliance and Accounting Manager will manage all pre- and post-award activities, maintain compliance with federal and state regulations, and oversee accurate grant accounting. The role will work closely with the Executive Director, our third-party grant management firm, and internal/external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
Grant Compliance and Accounting:
• Oversee grant administration for federal, state, and DOE-funded projects, ensuring efficient management of substantial funding portfolios.
• Ensure compliance with the federal (e.g., 2 CFR 200) and state grant regulations throughout the entire grant lifecycle.
• Review and reconcile grant budgets, expenditures, and journal entries to maintain fiscal accuracy.
• Coordinate timely and accurate grant reporting, including financial reports, drawdowns, and invoicing.
• Collaborate with third-party partners to manage and implement large-scale grants, ensuring successful execution of complex funding initiatives.
Pre-Award Activities:
• Support proposal development, including budget preparation and submission on Grants.gov or similar systems.
• Review contracts, awards, and agreements for compliance and risk assessment.
• Identify and evaluate new government funding opportunities.
• Support the drafting and submission of grant proposals ensuring proposals align with funding requirements and deadlines and align with the organization’s funding needs.
• Assist in preparing budgets for grant proposals, ensuring alignment with financial requirements and available resources.
Post-Award Activities:
• Monitor grant spending, ensuring it aligns with the budget and identifying under or overspending. Provide recommendations for adjustments.
• Prepare and provide accurate monthly financial reports to internal stakeholders.
• Serve as primary liaison for external audits and reviews.
• Manage grant close-out processes and ensure proper documentation is obtained and aligns with requirements.
Development Responsibilities:
• Collaborate with leadership to develop strategies for securing funding from government sources, foundations, and other partners to support energy and sustainability justice initiatives
• Contribute to fundraising proposals for diverse sources of funding, including foundations, corporate sponsorships, and private donors.
• Conduct research to identify potential funding sources and opportunities for EcoWorks' mission and programs.
Compliance and Procedures:
• Research and stay updated with current federal guidelines and regulations.
• Review and update organizational policies and procedures related to government grants and sponsored research.
• Train staff on compliance requirements, grant management systems, and processes.
• Develop and maintain grant related policies and procedures.
What You Will Need:
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• 7+ years of experience managing large-scale federal and state grants including compliance and accounting. Additional experience in pre- and post-award activities required.
• Strong knowledge of 2 CFR 200, federal regulations and policies and general accounting standards required.
• Experience with federal reporting systems such as Grants.gov, SAM.gov. and other grant management platforms required.
• Exceptional attention to detail, analytical skills, and the ability to manage complex grants required.
• Strong analytical, technical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Excellent communication skills required.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, Google Suite, and accounting software required.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience advising senior staff on compliance obligations and risk management.
• Experience working on DOE, EPA, or state energy grants.
• Possesses a strong background in indirect rate structures and risk management for compliance.
Additional Requirements:
• Authorized to work in the U.S.
• Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.
What We Offer:
• Competitive salary range starting at: $90,000 - $95,000 annually (commensurate with experience).
• Flexible work schedule.
• Paid time off: 3 weeks’ vacation, 6 holidays including 5-7 days off between Christmas and New Years, and one week of wellness time off.
