CNC Applications Engineer

NUM Corporation is currently seeking a full-time Applications Engineer to join us in the Naperville, IL office. NUM is a global leader in the Machine Automation and CNC industry specializing in custom-built and high-end solutions.

Specializing in CNC (computer numerical controls), PLCs, Industrial PCs, and related electrical and electronic systems including servo motor and drive systems; our company provides product support and integration services to OEM machine tool builders. Our customers manufacture machines for a variety of different large and small industries including (but not limited to) the aerospace, automotive, and energy sectors.

The application engineer will be responsible for:

•  Development and design of CNC machines

•  Define project specifications and understanding customers’ needs

•  Planning and development of custom application software for machines

•  Product knowledge (Advising on selection, maintenance, and use of)

•  Managing customer orders, projects, and commissioning new machines

•  Remote, on-site and in-house support of our products including providing training

•  Documenting and recording of activity using established methods and tools

Candidates should have an engineering degree with working knowledge and understanding in several key areas:

•  Automated motion, control systems, and mechatronics

•  Software development (C#, VB, JavaScript, Python, SQL, PLC IEC 61131)

•  User experience, GUI, and HMI development and design

•  Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office and Visual Studio products

•  Networking and field-bus communication systems

•  Reading electrical schematics and troubleshooting electrical systems

•  Experience with using virtual machines is a plus

•  Experience with control system tuning and filter analysis is a plus

Candidates should also have strong verbal and interpersonal skills, the ability to lead a team of engineers, and project management skills. The ability to work in a team and individually will be important and the position requires the engineer to be willing and able to travel up to 30% of the time.
