Welding Engineer / Metallurgist
Summary: Welding Engineer responsible to create and maintain the Company’s in-house fabrication weld procedures and procedure qualification records for the Company’s manufacturing shop, working closely on a per project basis with Project Engineers, Manufacturing, Quality Control and Sales Department personnel. Provide technical advice and consultation for the solution of welding problems during fabrication and with Company subcontract fabricators and verify all welding operations at the Company’s fabrication plant are efficiently and effectively operating, offering appropriate solutions for continuous improvement where required.
Essential Functions:
- Analyze and interpret in a timely manner customer welding, fabrication, and material specifications and Code requirements to identify and define atypical requirements during the job proposal process; assist sales in assessing cost of compliance.
- Prepare, supervise, and evaluate procedure qualification testing to ensure compliance with customer and Code(s) requirements; incorporate requirements into test protocols and create or modify welding documents to ensure compliance.
- Produce and maintain the Company’s welding procedure (WPS) and procedure qualification registry (PQR).
- Interpret ASME Code or identify ASME Code requirements to assist engineering, manufacturing, or purchasing as required on a project basis.
- Provide Engineering group with a single point of contact for materials expertise to assist in the evaluation of applicability and fabrication requirements, including weldability of new, novel, or customer required materials.
- Work with Quality Control and Manufacturing personnel in the preparation of work instructions and manufacturing standards involving shop welding.
- Provide direction to metallurgical consultants when performing failure analyses and evaluate customer performed failure analysis reports.
- Create and maintain welding procedure and performance qualification databases and ensure compliance of performance testing to ASME Code requirements.
- Maintain shop welder qualification testing program and create welder qualification test forms and logs; create and maintain welder qualification records; issue welder stamps, maintain and verify welder continuity logs.
Technical Skills:
- Advanced level of experience working with large-scope, complex engineering projects.
- Advanced knowledge in design or manufacture of high temperature steam equipment and some knowledge and experience working with auxiliary equipment such as pumps, burners, and fans.
- Technical expertise in metallurgy a plus.
- Strong weld experience with carbon, alloy and stainless steels; Advanced welding skills (SAW, SMAW, GTAW, FCAW, GMAW)
- Advanced knowledge of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section I, Section VIII, Division I and Section IX Codes.
- Familiarity with American Welding Society (AWS) codes and principals and with Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) codes to be capable of passing a CWB review of the engineer’s qualifications and experience for company certification.
- Strong analytical, communication and organizational skills.
- Intermediate to advanced technical software skills to keep accurate and easily accessible records: Engineering software, MS Office, MS Outlook, and MRP system.

Physical Requirements:
- Type on a keyboard and use a personal computer.

Education: B.S. Degree in Mechanical or Welding Engineering required. Master’s Degree in Welding or Metallurgical Engineering preferred. Equivalent experience at discretion of management.
Experience:
Ten plus years of previous related experience preferred.
