Job Title: Tutor
Location: Boys & Girls Club of Stamford
Reports To: Unit Director
Job Summary:
The Boys & Girls Club of Stamford is seeking a committed and patient Tutor to provide academic support to children and youth in our after-school programs. The ideal candidate will have the ability to work one-on-one or in small groups, helping students strengthen their academic skills across subjects such as math, literacy, and science. This role is essential in creating an engaging, supportive learning environment where students can improve their academic performance, build confidence, and achieve their educational goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide individualized or small-group tutoring sessions to students, focusing on areas such as reading, writing, math, and science.
- Assess students’ academic strengths and areas for improvement to develop tailored lesson plans and instructional strategies.
- Assist students with homework assignments, projects, and test preparation, ensuring understanding of key concepts.
- Create a positive, encouraging, and respectful environment where students feel comfortable seeking help and asking questions.
- Monitor student progress, provide feedback, and communicate regularly with students and families about academic performance and growth.
- Adapt tutoring techniques to meet the diverse learning styles, abilities, and needs of students.
- Foster a growth mindset, encouraging students to believe in their ability to improve through effort and practice.
- Work collaboratively with program staff to ensure a holistic approach to supporting students’ academic and personal development.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, progress, and feedback.
- Promote and uphold the mission and values of the Boys & Girls Club of Stamford.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Previous tutoring or teaching experience preferred, but not required.
- Strong academic background, particularly in reading, writing, and math.
- Patience and the ability to communicate complex concepts in a clear, understandable way.
- Ability to work with diverse student populations, adapting tutoring methods to individual needs.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Enthusiasm for working with children and youth, and a commitment to helping them succeed academically.
- Ability to collaborate with staff, students, and families to support student growth.
- Background check required.
Working Conditions:
- Position is part-time after school, with some evenings required for events and family engagement.
- Work is primarily performed in a classroom or group setting within the Boys & Girls Club of Stamford facilities.
- Some travel between program sites may be required.
