Associate Teacher (Special Education Grades 1-6)

Company Description:

The Gamut School is a new independent middle school for children with emotional challenges opening in September for the 2025-2026 school year. We are the first middle school based on the philosophy of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). We provide a rigorous education for students with emotional challenges, offering a unique dual curriculum of social-emotional education combined with rigorous academics. Our school is built on the DBT philosophy, ensuring cohesion between academic and therapeutic approaches for middle school students. We are committed to creating a community where students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Role Description:

We are seeking experienced and passionate associate teachers for our inaugural 5th and 6th-grade classrooms. Our associate teachers primary responsibility is to provide opportunities for social, emotional, physical and cognitive growth through a balance of activities and experiences which are developmentally appropriate and foster independence. Our associate teachers are key players in the classroom and will be actively supporting the head teacher throughout the day.

Key Responsibilities:

  • The Associate Teacher supports the Head Teacher in the development and implementation of instruction in all subjects
  • The position involves daily collaboration with the Head Teacher and other professionals
  • The ideal candidate has worked with students in a special education setting, and is eager to learn from an experienced team of professionals
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of a therapeutically supportive and rigorously academic program
  • Demonstrate warmth towards students and set positive example through your actions in the classroom
  • Evaluate and attend to student’s needs
  • Contribute to and participate in parent conferences and staff meetings
  • Attend on site staff development in services to promote professional growth and maintain an ongoing level of competency in the field of special education
  • Assist in setting up, cleaning and maintaining classroom equipment and supplies
  • Conduct self with professional integrity, respect and maintain confidentiality for families served and staff

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in education or a related field (required)
  • Eligible for NYS Teacher Certification in Students with Disabilities Grades 1-6 (preferred)
  • Must have at least 1 year of teaching experience
  • Must be able to lift, carry and hold students and classroom equipment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Thorough understanding of classroom procedures and management
  • Ability to develop trusting and supportive relationships with students
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to collaborate with the therapeutic team members
  • Team-oriented approach with a positive work attitude

  • Pay: $45,000 - $55,000 per year
