Medicine

October 2017 • Long Beach, CA

What I liked

Over the summer I was able to rotate through the Urgent Care Department. I most liked being able to observe certain procedures. For instance, I was able to observe a physician extract an infected toenail.

What I wish was different

While I did enjoy observation, I wish I had been able to do it more often. Most of the time I was taking patients' vital signs and assisting the RNs with rooming patients.

Advice

Introduce yourself to anyone new and be vocal about what you're interested in!

Data Analyst Intern

June - August 2018 • Walnut Creek, CA

What I liked

As an Intern- I loved the experience I had in understanding what kind of IT roles come into play in the health field. I also got accepted into Kaiser's summer CIO presentation and presented to the CIO. I got to wear many hats and learned so many skills outside of my job description. I had fun and got A LOT of swag. I got to network with VPs and made new connections on my LinkedIn. Overall, I feel like I grew as a person as well as a Kaiser intern. The amount of attention they give to their interns shows how important and serious they take their IT program. In the end, I felt so appreciated and felt that I made a difference even though I was learning new things every day.

What I wish was different

I wish my commute was not an hour each way.

Advice

Even if you feel under qualified, you should still apply for the position. The worst that will happen is not landing the job. The world won't end.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to be an intern so that I would be able to get more hands on experience with the profession.

Strategic Finance Intern

June - August 2018 • Oakland, CA

What I liked

During my internship for Kaiser Permanente's Treasury Department, I enjoyed being to utilize the fundamentals I have learned in my SMC courses through hands on experience. I was given so many responsibilities and tasks that I never thought I would have during my undergrad. I also had a great mentor and supervisor during my internship who took me under their wings and taught me the ins and outs of Kaiser. I was also able to network with not only other KP Launch interns, but also with several Kaiser employees who took genuine interest in what I wanted to do in my future career.

What I wish was different

I ended up having to split my internship into two offices, one in Oakland and the other in Pleasanton, which made networking with Kaiser employees difficult in the beginning. However, during my last week, my supervisor let me take some time to network only and to attend some of the office events/celebrations which was nice.

Advice

I would advise every student, business major or not, to take on an internship during at least two of your summers as an undergraduate student. You are learning so much material and gaining the experience that you would never get inside of a classroom. This is also not only an awesome resume builder, but you get to expand your network at such a young age when people want to reach out and help in any way they can. Take advantages of the resources offered to you and learn about careers that you never thought about.

Software Engineering Intern

June - September 2018 • Lake Oswego, OR

What I liked

I learned a lot! I was working with a bunch of really cool (although slightly old) technology. It was great experience, and I learned way more than I would have in any class. They had SVPs and other higher ups give weekly talks to just interns, which were great to listen to. Overall, every level of leadership at KP was very involved with everyone (even us lowly interns) and had a clear direction of where they wanted to lead the company.

What I wish was different

I wish I had worked in a team-based environment. I was on a team, but I was working on a separate project with only one other developer who was off-shore. The project was created to help the main team so it felt good helping, but it would've been much better if I had been working with everyone around me.

Advice

Programming isn't just coding. The lead developer I was working with would give me an article to read everyday to boost my knowledge about what was going on in the programs I was working on that I wouldn't have picked up by myself. Also, talk to your manager about areas of improvement. Ask and you will receive!

research intern

May - August 2018 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

One thing I enjoyed greatly was having the opportunity to see different parts of large healthcare company.

What I wish was different

Because of where I was in my experience in research, I really did not have the opportunity to be fully exposed to all of the projects that were being done. Also, because research projects take some time to get off the ground, I really did not have time to fully invest into the projects in development.

Advice

Once you're in your internship or job, keep the same energy you had when you were trying to get the job and apply it to the work you do everyday.

Student Nurse Intern

June - August 2019 • Santa Clara, CA

What I liked

This student nurse internship was the ideal opportunity to be able to practice my nursing skills, apply nursing theory, and also learn from experienced nurses themselves at a trusted hospital facility. I had the chance to work closely with nurses from various departments, floating among the Wound Care Team, PICC Nurses, Emergency Department, Medical-Surgical units, Intensive Care Units, and Rapid Response Team. Floating to each of these units helped me to both practice my nursing skills and also better understand the role of the nurse in each of these settings. I learned how to treat patients in life-threatening emergent situations, especially in the Emergency Department, and how to consult other nursing specialties for opinions and optimum patient care with the Wound Care Team. Nursing school does not offer students the opportunity to experience such a wide variety of specialities, so this Kaiser Student Nurse Internship was the perfect learning experience. In addition, this internship allowed me to work closely with the nursing educators. I had many opportunities to assist the nurse educators with annual nurse inservice training days, coordinating with the nurse educator to provide information on the latest technologies and updates to nursing practice. In addition, I worked closely with the nurse educators and head of the nursing department to conduct audits for quality improvement. We audited various medical-surgical floors, collecting data about patient satisfaction related to bedside manner. From this data, we were able to formulate an action plan to improve patient satisfaction through bedside handoff. I appreciated this opportunity to experience the administrative, research perspective of nursing, which I could not get from my regular nursing education.

What I wish was different

This internship sadly was only three days per week, and I would have loved the opportunity for the internship to allow me to work more than 24 hrs per week or for the internship to have extended beyond a three month period. There was still so much more I would have loved to learn about hospital policies, nursing needs, and patient outcomes, and I would have loved for the opportunity to contribute more to the facility to implement more change to benefit patient satisfaction and nurses' work flow. For myself, I wish I had sought out more opportunities and work shifts to work with the nursing specialties I could see myself pursuing. I would have shadowed more in the ICU and ED and been more bold to talk to the nurses about their experience or their own tips and tricks of the trade that they've acquired over the years.

Advice

For anyone who has the opportunity to also be a student nurse intern at the Kaiser Permanente Summer Internship Program, I encourage you to be bold to seek out every learning opportunity. If there is a department or technological device that peaks your interest, be eager to ask the staff, who are always more than willing, to teach you what you want to learn. This opportunity is so unique as you do not have the pressure to perform like you would in school, and without that stressor, the learning is more independent and conducive to your ability to retain all of this invaluable knowledge.

Delivery System Operations Intern

May - August 2018 • Rockville, MD

What I liked

- Some of the nicest people I've ever met - Internship cohort programs were fun - Lots of networking opportunities - Great exposure to both a major healthcare system and the business side - Internship program gives you exposure to the COO, President of the Region, and even the national CEO - Traveled (by car) to different offices

What I wish was different

- For some interns, there is no set plan at the beginning of the internship. It's best to get assigned a project at first and build off that - Had a lot of idle time

Advice

Make sure you set a clear plan with your supervisor at first for what your summer will consist of (deliverables)

Training and Development Intern

May - August 2017 • Portland, OR

What I liked

I liked that it was an engaging internship. It didn't just throw me into doing my work but rather, I got to work alongside other people who needed my help and meet students like myself along the way. I was never bored.

What I wish was different

The way my job was structured. I worked in a secluded area so I didn't always get the chance to see my cohorts except during special events or meetings.

Advice

Be prepared for anything! You won't always get to choose the job you want so my best advice is to push through and make the most of any position you land.
