Shadow At Kaiser Permanente Out-care

June - August 2019 • San Ramon, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed the friendly staff and optimal work environment in terms of offering Physical Therapists the tools they need to provide the care that patients deserve.

What I wish was different

I wish there was less exposure to charting, as it consisted of a large part of the day and took away from the questions that I was able to ask the Physical Therapists in the department.

Advice

Be prepared to ask a lot of questions and take constant notes to ensure you remember your experience!

Kaiser Nursing Student Extern

June - August 2019 • Redwood City, CA

What I liked

I worked with the Nursing Education unit at Kaiser Permanente Redwood City where I participated in orienting new nurses to the hospital, unit yearly nursing skills reviews and check-offs, chart reviews in relation to stroke patients, creating educational posters to nasogastric tube insertion and transition to EnFit adaptions, as well as for injection and needle safety. I also had the great opportunity to shadow a PICC nurse, wound care nurse and follow a patient from pre-operative, operating room and post-operation. I worked with the director of nursing education, the neuroscience clinical nurse specialist, med-surg/telemetry educator and the intensive care unit educator.

What I wish was different

I wish I had the chance to be placed as a clinical student nurse extern like some of my other classmates.

Advice

Take what you can get and make the most of it. I didn't know what to expect when placed on the education unit but it was a great opportunity, I met some amazing people who taught me a lot.

Contact Lens Fitter

June 2018 • Orange, CA

What I liked

love the flexibility of hours vs school/ life balance.

What I wish was different

the interview and hiring process was very long so it was a while before I even hit the job site. had to been a falser process it would have been easier to align my education with the position and hours of availability from the begging.

Advice

read the mandatory and recommended skills/ education in the postings very closely. then follow that model. even if you come to something similar down the line, the better you fit their interests the more they are likely to hire you.

Volunteer

June 2023 • Walnut Creek, CA

What I liked

What I like about this role is being able to meet so many new and different people. I also like that I can provide physical (wheelchair transport) and emotional support to the people that I meet.

What I wish was different

Nothing to add.

Advice

What I've learned from my role is that patience and a smile go a long way in helping patients feel more comfortable and welcomed during their stay at the Medical Center. Lots of people come into the Medical Center for the very first time and are lost, nervous, and anxious. To help make their visit a memorable one (in the positive sense), it's important to be calm and understanding with every patient that you meet.
